When electronically filing Form 482 through Expert Tax, certain validation errors may appear from the Puerto Rico Treasury system (SURI). Below, we list the most common errors and how to resolve them:
🔴 The identification number, ID Type, and/or taxpayer name do not match the records at the Department of the Treasury.
How to Resolve:
This error occurs when the basic information of the taxpayer or spouse does not match what Hacienda has on file. Please verify:
- The Social Security Number or ITIN is entered correctly.
- The first and last names exactly match the Social Security card or birth certificate.
- Try adding or removing accents or special characters (tildes).
- There are no extra spaces before the name (spaces count as characters).
If the issue persists after verifying, contact Hacienda via the SURI Assistance link on their website or by calling (787) 622-0123.
🔴 Refund Amount Does Not Match
Error Message:
The refund amount provided does not match the Department of Hacienda records for this taxpayer.
How to Resolve:
Make sure the refund amount from the previous tax year being entered is correct. You can confirm this amount by reviewing last year’s filed return or by checking your SURI account.
🔴 Merchant Registration Number Mismatch
Error Message:
The Merchant registration number provided does not match the records at the Department of the Treasury.
How to Resolve:
This error indicates a mismatch between the merchant registration number and Hacienda’s database. Even if the number is entered correctly as shown in SURI, their system might flag it as inconsistent.
Note: According to Hacienda, the "Merchant Registration Number" field is not required for filing. You may proceed without including this number.
🔴 Specialist PIN Mismatch
Error Message:
The Specialist registration and the Pin Number in the rest do not match the record at the Department of the Treasury.
How to Resolve:
Ensure the preparer’s registration number has exactly 7 digits. If it has fewer digits, add leading zeroes until it reaches 7 digits.
🔴 Return Not Found for Amendment
Error Message:
There is no original return filed for this tax year under that identification number, ID Type and tax period.
How to Resolve:
This message appears when trying to file an amended return, but the original return has not yet been processed by Hacienda.
Wait until the original return is accepted and processed in SURI before filing the amendment.
Also, verify that the "Amended Return" option is not selected if you're filing the original return.
🔴 Original Return Already Filed
Error Message:
A return has already been filed with this ID, ID TYPE, and filing period.
How to Resolve:
This means a return has already been filed for that taxpayer and tax period. Please verify whether:
- You are trying to file a duplicate return.
- The return was previously submitted by the taxpayer or another preparer.
🔴 Matching Name/ID Error
Error Message:
The information related to the ID, ID TYPE and name of either the taxpayer or spouse... does not match the Treasury Department records.
How to Resolve:
This error could be caused by discrepancies in:
- Name, date of birth, or Social Security Number of the taxpayer or spouse.
- Typos or incorrect data entered into the system.
Carefully verify all fields. You may compare the data to the previous year’s return to identify differences.
